Phoenix Healthcare’s story begins in 2018, when our founders realised access to quality home and community support services could be better. The Phoenix signifies strength, determination, passion, resilience and compassion. These attributes underpin our service delivery approach and the qualities we look for in our people.

From humble beginnings, Phoenix Healthcare has risen from the garage to the innovative health provider we are today. Offering a range of quality services, we’re proud to walk alongside our clients and funders to ensure accessible healthcare services and better health outcomes for the people of Waitaha/ Canterbury, our community.

Dr Sara Gonzalez Rodriguez
Dr Sara Gonzalez Rodriguez
General Practitioner

Sara completed her medical studies in 2015 in Spain, since which time she has worked in Spain and completed her training as a Specialist in Family and Community Medicine in 2020. She enjoys providing continuous care for her patients as a basis for maintaining health. She moved with her husband to New Zealand in 2021 as they both enjoy the New Zealand lifestyle in contact with nature.

Kia ora, my name is Martin Gardner and I have been a GP for 25 years and an urgent care doctor for 12 years. I have worked in Christchurch as a GP and have done many rural Canterbury GP locums but more latterly have been working at the 24 Hour Surgery running the Acute Demand programme. I am married with 2 grown sons, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 6 chickens. In my spare time I enjoy playing music, reading, tramping, mountain biking and being in the great outdoors generally. I am looking forward to working at the Phoenix Health Hub and helping people to achieve their best health outcomes.

Nurse Practitioner

Gen has joined the Phoenix team after many years specialising in Urgent Care, initially as a registered nurse then as a Nurse Practitioner. She has also been a PRIME emergency clinician in North Canterbury for over 10 years and continues to work in this scope of practice on a regular basis. Gen’s other clinical passions are neonatal care, wound management and disability awareness. In her spare time Gen keeps busy with two teenagers and a loveable rescue dog called Holly.

With her extensive experience in the field, she has honed her skills in patient care, health education, and nursing procedures. I emigrated to NZ from the UK in 2006 after having been a Registered Nurse since leaving school many years ago! I started my Occupational Health career in 1999 and still enjoy this specialty, helping to ensure or improve the health of individuals in a variety of workplaces. As Occupational Health Nurse Manager I have responsibility for the management and specialist clinical care and nursing practices in our unit. Out of work I enjoy golf, planning my next travel adventure or catching up with my sons and grandson.

Ruth commenced Occupational Health Nursing around 2002, after working in a variety of health settings as a registered nurse. She attained a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from Massey University and has worked alongside a variety of firms from office to industrial company settings. She has a genuine interest in people and what they do for employment. Ruth’s pastime interests are tramping, jogging, gardening, reading and craft.
